City of Mechelen

Country : Belgique/België (BE)
Address : Grote Markt, 21, 2800, Mechelen, Belgique/België (BE) 2800 Mechelen

The City of Mechelen brings strong expertise in climate adaptation, participatory urban development and citizen engagement to MultiRoofs. With its dense historic city centre and a high proportion of sealed surfaces, the city is actively addressing challenges such as heat stress, flooding and the need for more urban greenery. Building on initiatives such as Climate Roofs, as well as its experience in European projects and neighbourhood redevelopment, Mechelen is exploring how rooftops can contribute to greening, the energy transition and other urban functions. Its strong tradition of cross-departmental collaboration and engagement with local citizen movements provides an important foundation for turning these ambitions into practical solutions.

Within MultiRoofs, Mechelen leads Work Package 2, coordinating the development of the Digital Twin and the implementation of pilot actions across the project. As a pilot city, Mechelen will use local data to identify rooftop opportunities and engage public and private property owners, while developing incentive schemes to encourage the uptake of multifunctional rooftops. The city also shares its expertise in citizen engagement with the wider partnership and contributes to the joint training programme, helping other public authorities build the knowledge and skills needed to implement multifunctional rooftop strategies. Through its local networks and experience, Mechelen also supports the dissemination and replication of MultiRoofs approaches and results.
