The City of Mannheim brings strong experience in urban transformation, stakeholder engagement and Smart City solutions to MultiRoofs. As one of Germany’s hottest cities, with a densely built and highly sealed city centre, Mannheim sees multifunctional rooftops as a valuable opportunity to strengthen climate adaptation and support a more sustainable urban future. Rooftop activation is already part of the city’s urban development strategy, building on its experience with temporary and innovative uses of urban spaces and a well-established network of property owners and real estate stakeholders.

Within MultiRoofs, Mannheim develops and implements a local pilot action to explore new uses for rooftops and engage building owners in their transformation. The city’s Smart City unit also contributes to the MultiRoofs Digital Twin, using data to better identify and unlock rooftop potential. Through existing initiatives such as the FutuRaum downtown transformation project and Mannheim’s first rooftop festival, the city can build on established local networks to connect the project with key stakeholders. Mannheim also supports the MultiRoofs training programme, helping to share the project’s knowledge, tools and solutions with relevant local actors.
